Item Description
c. 1857-1868. Archival mat has 4.25x6-5/8” sheet in center w/highly detailed ink and watercolor scene of King Falstaff seated on fallen tree holding sword surrounded by troops w/church spires in background. Art is signed in ink “George Cruikshank” at lower left. Exc. Art was done for “Life Of Sir John Falstaff” by R. B. Brough and had caption “Falstaff’s Ragged Regiment”. Cruikshank (1792-1878) was an English caricaturist and book illustrator, noted for his work in novels by Charles Dickens. Extremely well done, and one of the nicest Cruikshank originals we’ve ever seen. From the Schechter Family Collection.
