7.25x9-3/8” semi-glossy sepia tone photo c. late 1930s has nice fountain pen inscription in 1.5x1.5” area at lower left “To Miss Betty Smith With Best Wishes Hal Foster”. Reverse side has ink stamp of Chicago photographers “Allison-Lighthall”. 7x8.5” typewritten letter w/“Harold R. Foster” letterhead dated July 17, 1978 responds to request for sketch and refers writer to the “Museum Of Cartoon Art” in NY. Signed in ballpoint pen “Hal Foster”. Letter has lt. horizontal fold through center as mailed, last two letters of Foster’s last name on photo are in dark area, both items otherwise Exc. Nice examples to frame together by the noted artist who drew the “Tarzan” Sunday comic strip 1928-1937 and “Prince Valiant” 1937-1975.
