Item Description
Large and impressive die-cut cardboard standee w/double easel back measures 21.5x49.5" tall. Standee features full body image of Popeye making a muscle in front of box of Wheatena cereal. ©1929 KFS, but 1930s. Popeye holds sign reading "'I Sez Wheatena Makes Muskle!' Popeye Is On The Air." We sold a much smaller version of this standee in a previous auction that measured 11.75x17-3/8" and featured Popeye's upper body only. That version sold for for $836. See small Popeye Wheatena display, #1974. This one is not only much more impressive than that version but is among the most impressive Popeye display pieces we've ever seen. Top left corner of Wheatena box image has creasing and horizontal fold at center (as issued) shows moderate wear/aging. Popeye's raised arm has 16" streak of what appears to be silver paint. This is uneven and w/some time and effort, could likely be flaked off. Word balloon area has 4" streak of staining/paint. Back of standee has all over tiny age spotting/dust soiling and front of standee has some scattered aging/dust soiling but is still very impressive w/deep, rich color. VG/Fine. Rare and first we've seen of this large and impressive size.
