Item Description
First is 5” long torpedo shaped decoder of cardboard, wood, paper and metal issued by Post Toasties in 1942. This is among the rarest premiums. The torpedo has cardboard body with paper label covering. There is a removable wooden nose at one end and a metal fin at the opposite end. Tube is marked “Don Winslow Undercover Deputy” and the nose includes alphabet and numbers that can be lined up for decoding purposes. The narrow end of the torpedo has discoloration of the gold color with some tarnish dots on the metal fin. Inscription is still easily readable. The right half of the tube remains Exc. Secret messages could be stored inside the piece and the metal fin is dull on one side but with bright luster on the other to serve as a “heliograph” to flash secret messages. With this rare premium comes an even less known paper entitled “Sealed Orders From Don Winslow For Undercover Deputy’s.” Paper is 6x7” and only in Good condition as it has numerous old and more recent tape repairs plus it was stored for many years apparently within the torpedo. One side is designed as a certificate while the two interior pages explain the many features of the Golden Torpedo. The example of this in the Hake guide was incomplete as pieces were torn out but this example is at least complete. The Hake guide value for these two pieces, even just in Good condition, is $750.
