Item Description
This is an elaborate and beautifully constructed premium with 1.5x2.5” deep golden luster metal top which has extensive embossed text along with illustrations of a pair of telescopes and anchors. A ribbon design carries the title “Jack Armstrong Heliograph And Distance Finder.” Beneath are a series of lines giving various “Mariner’s Measures” for example “6 FT=1 Fathom”. Across the top of the piece are four rectangular narrow compartments of various lengths. These have captions referencing fractions of a mile and were used for estimating distance. The interior of the piece is hollow to serve as a secret compartment but it also includes a blue steel spring that can be pressed to produce clicking sounds for Morse code usage. The back cover of the piece has a metal panel in silver luster with the interior serving as a signaling mirror and with the exterior providing the Morse chart. Most black letters, dots and dashes have lost the black color, but all “Ghost” images remain visible. The rest of the premium is in gorgeous NM condition. The instructions are not here but there are two paper sheets 2x3.5” with one showing “Big Dipper/North Star” chart. The second sheet promotes this premium to “Boys! Girls!” and names the sponsor as Bisquick plus address for General Mills in Minnesota with mailing expiration date of July 25, 1938. This piece was used as a test premium and extremely few were distributed. In Hake’s Pop Culture Guide the near mint value is $1,750.
