Item Description
General Mill’s was a firm believer in radio advertising targeting both adults and kids. The larger 3” glow-in-dark gardenia brooch in this lot was offered as a premium over several different programs including Jack Armstrong in 1939 and later for the Lone Ranger in 1941. This plastic brooch is 3” across featuring green plastic leaves behind cream-colored replica of a gardenia with many petals. In this lot it comes with a 3x3” card that once held it and which has inked inscription in red “Card For ‘Betty’s’ Gardenia Brooch. 1939.” Card also has some creases but is fully intact. It is rarer than the brooch itself. When used as a Lone Ranger premium it appeared in the 1941 Lone Ranger National Defense Portfolio as a premium titled “Something For Mother.” The brooch itself is Mint and glowing. Lot includes a smaller 2.5” glow-in-dark brooch. This has darker green leaves. We do not know who issued it but it does glow and it is rare. Last item in the lot is a 5x5” paper with two original folds. One side is titled “Story Of Your Gardenia Brooch” while the other side promotes Kix cereal and includes an order blank for additional brooches. Small edge wear.
