Item Description
c. 1950s. 8x13-1/8" cardboard prototype book for an unproduced book that featured "A Rhyme To Read...A Rhyme To Hear" and "'Pop Up' Figures To See!" Front cover features great profile image of Little Miss Muffet dropping bowl of porridge as spider dangles before her. Book opens to reveal nicely constructed pop-up scene featuring Miss Muffet, cartoon mouse character, spider, sleeping cat and anthropomorphic pitcher. Page design below this features storybook design w/inked nursery rhyme and duplicate text in lead pencil. To right of this is foil disc (w/.25" puncture) w/metal grommet at center. This has attached wire arm that connects to 2-7/8" dia. vinyl record, which has a hole to insert pencil into. This features was designed to play nursery rhyme as record was turned counter clockwise w/aid of pencil. Record has warped somewhat but still produces sound and has scattered pencil marks. Back of book has additional promo text about Little Miss Muffet and Marx company name. Scattered aging and handling wear. Fine overall. Great design for this unproduced book. From the John Bowers Collection.
