Item Description
Original 3-3/8x5" glossy photo showing 14 team members in uniforms along w/owner Alejandro Pompez who stands at center wearing a suit. They are posed on a ball field. The key player is Cuban HOF member Alejandro Oms who is seated third from the right. He ranks second all time for career batting average in the Cuban League (behind Cristobal Torriente). The other players (including additional Cuban HOF members) are: Pelayo Chacon, V. Rodriquez, Barcelo, Jose Junco, Pablo Mesa, Isidro Fabre, Juan Padrone, M. Borroto, Recurvon Teran, Tatica Campos, Juanelo Mirabal, Oscar Levis & Julian Fabelo. As for Pompez, he was among the most influential owners in black baseball history and his New York Cuban Stars were among the top teams for more than three decades. Perhaps Pompez’s most significant contribution to the history of organized baseball was the opening and mining of the Dominican Republic market while working for the NY Giants of the Major Leagues. Pompez maintained a relationship with the Giants for 25 years. He was eventually named Director of International Scouting. In 2006 he was inducted into the National Baseball HOF. Very little baseball memorabilia exists w/his image and this is a superb example. Moderate aging and handling wear. Otherwise blank reverse has a small inked number. Photo remains glossy and image is sharp. Fine.
