Item Description
Original 4.25x6.5" glossy photo great image of Juan (Acosta) Padron in uniform of the Cuban Stars East. He had two stints w/this team and the photo dates to that time period, 1918-20 & 1923. Between 1915 and 1926 he played for a number of other Negro League teams that also included the NY Lincoln Stars, Chicago American Giants, NY Cubans and others. His first professional baseball season of 1900, he led the Cuban League in both batting and pitching. Playing for Havana in the Cuban League in 1908, out-pitched his teammate, Rube Foster further validating his standing as one of the early dominant pitchers in Cuban baseball. Later, he taught Rube's half-brother, Willie Foster, how to throw the change-up, which was a pitch that he excelled with. Padron pitched for 11 years in the Cuban Winter Leagues with a lifetime record of 39-23. In 1924, he was recognized as one of the three greatest Cuban pitchers of all-time along with Jose Mendez and Eustaquio Pedroso. Elected to Cuban HOF in 1943. Reverse has his name in ink at the top. Front shows light corner tip and handling wear. Remains bright and glossy w/sharp image. Fine.
