Item Description
Lot of 20 (of 80 published) original illustrations that appear in "Mother Goose In Gridiron Rhyme" by Roy T. Vernon and published for the December Dinner of The Gridiron Club in Washington DC Dec. 9, 1911. The Gridiron Club, founded in 1885, is a social club for Washington journalists. Book was published by The Gridiron Press and features illustrations (unsigned) by noted political cartoonist Clifford Berryman, noted for his Theodore Roosevelt cartoons featuring Teddy Bears. These pieces of art came from the personal collection of Vernon, a William Taft campaign manager and later Washington, DC-based Chicago Daily News correspondent. Artboards measure between 5x6.5" and 7x10" and feature single panel India ink cartoon image. The book features printed verses w/each illustration, often using subject's name if specific person is the subject matter. These include - Taft w/Jonathan Bourne; Joseph Cannon w/Champ Clark; Philander Knox; Franklin MacVeagh w/George von Meyer; Gifford Pinchot; Congress members "Z For Zoo"; Bill Heyburn w/Bill Borah; William Lorimer; "High Cost Of Living" (Coffin Trust); "High Cost Of Living" (Beer); "High Cost Of Living" (Shoes); "High Cost Of Living" (Ultimately Consumed); Simon Guggenheim (Alaska); Vice-President James Sherman w/Joseph Bailey; Tariff Board (Taft, Joe Cannon, Consumer, Black Sheep); Henry Cabot Lodge w/W. Murray Crane; Joseph Cannon; Bryan as 1912 Hopeful; Boies Penrose; Robert LaFollette w/Coe I. Crawford. Each piece has pin holes at corners w/penciled page number at right corner. Artboards have some lt. handling wear and scattered aging but all art remains clean and Exc. Comes w/reading copy of the 6.5x8" softcover w/80 pages. Endpapers have been inscribed in black ink by the author to his aunt and is dated Dec. 1911. Last page has had "Cartoonist" designation added in ink by Vernon after Berryman's name. Covers have moderate dust soiling and handling wear w/creases at corners. Both front and back covers have some moisture staining. Good/VG while interior pages have a few scattered age spots but remain clean and VF overall. Each illustration comes w/8.5x11" "Certificate of Origin" prepared by the auction firm that sold the Vernon Collection. Each certificate shows the individual piece of art, book's front cover, an illustration (w/Teddy Bear) that Berryman prepared featuring the author's name and handwritten letter (including book's title) from Berryman to Vernon acknowledging a letter Vernon wrote to thank Berryman for his illustrations.
