Item Description
17.5x25.25" artboard (pieced together from two pieces, w/tape and glue stains on reverse) has original pen and ink art for Jan. 18, 1948 Sunday page by creator V.T. Hamlin. Eight panel story features Alley Oop (in armor) confronting an old and decrepit Chinese dragon, who begs Alley Oop to kill him so he can join his ancestors. Alley Oop is glad to oblige, but once he learns the dragon is from China, the dragon starts to tell him his story, featuring his previous master, one Oop Wu Sing, very clearly a stereotypical Chinese relative of Alley Oop. Last panel features Oop Wu Sing riding dragon as he flies through the air. Alley Oop appears in five panels whereas the dragon appears in six (two w/Oop Wu Sing). First panel has Hamlin's inked name and trademark paste-over strip and last panel has copyright paste-over strip. Margins have printer's centering paste-overs, but art remains clean and Exc. Original "Alley Oop" strip/page art from this period is quite rare.
