This the second in the "Smiling Pool" series by Thornton Burgess (1874–1965), a conservationist and author of children's stories. Burgess incorporated nature and its creatures in his books and newspaper column, "Bedtime Stories" for 50 years. Sometimes known as the "Bedtime Story-Man," he had written over 170 books and 15,000 stories for the daily newspaper column when he retired. Book features illustrations by Harrison Cady, including seven color illustrations. Cady's Peter Rabbit appears on one and features into story. Frontispiece has been signed in black ink by Burgess, who adds "Your Story Friend" inscription and "1926" date. DJ shows moderate wear along top w/small tears and 1/8x1.5" sliver off. Rest of DJ has all over small age spotting. VG. Book itself has 5" tear along binding to one color plate but plate remains in place. Fine overall. See Burgess lots #1486-1487, Cady art #1556.
