Item Description
Pair of 6x8" celluloid-covered plaques featuring real photo images of legendary boxers Jack Dempsey and Gene Tunney. Both are pictured w/Jimmy DeForest, an early 20th Century boxing trainer of such future legends as Dempsey and Tunney as well as James J. Jeffries, Joe Gans, Joe Walcott and Luis Firpo. He later became a boxing matchmaker at the Polo Grounds. He also promoted the Harry Greb vs. Mickey Walker bout. Plaques date to the late 1920s. Dempsey plaque is missing wire stanchion back. Both plaques have scattered edge wear/aging but o/w remain bright and glossy. VF overall. Rare. Comes w/worn 2.75x3-1/8" ticket stub for Sept. 22, 1927 Tunney vs. Dempsey match (where Tunney emerged as victor). Stub shows obvious wear and has aged strip of tape as reinforcement. Fair and just comes along. This and following lots #868-869 originated from the collection of DeForest. Paul Muchinsky Collection.
