Item Description
Largest is 2.25"/smallest 1.5". First reads "Stop Racist Frame-Up Free Billy Smith" and features profile portrait of Smith in uniform. Smith, a resident of Watts, was held for 16 months while awaiting a court-martial after being accused of injuring one and killing two lieutenants with a grenade tossed into the officer's barracks. He was found not guilty 11/14/72. Second reads "Free Assata Break De Chains". Assata Shakur was a member of the Black Panthers and later the Black Liberation Army. She is most famous for her involvement in a shoot out on the New Jersey turnpike. She was convicted of murder and in 1979 escaped from prison and fled to Cuba where she gained political asylum and remains to this day. She was the first woman to be listed on the FBI's Most Wanted Terrorist list. Third item relates to James Richardson who was convicted in 1968 of murdering one of his seven children with a pesticide. Janet Reno, at the time a Dade County State Attorney, examined the case and concluded that an injustice had been done and charges were dropped. He was released in 1989. Button reads "Free James Richardson And All Political Prisoners". Last piece reads "Fight Racism Fight Injustice Free Betty Tyson People United For Justice". Tyson, along with John Duval, was arrested in 1973 for the bludgeoning and strangulation death of Timothy Haworth in Rochester, New York. The pair signed confessions but later recanted claiming they had been beaten into falsely confessing. In 1998 the conviction was overturned when it was found police suppressed information contradicting a key witness in the case. Traces of normal surface wear seen in reflected light. NM displaying Mint. Comes with Hake's COA. Marshall Levin Collection.
