Andrew P. Yanchus (1944-2021) was a lifelong collector, founding member of the 1960s comic fan group “The Illegitimate Sons of Superman,” and decades-long fixture in multiple hobbyist and collector scenes. His career started with Aurora Plastics in the mid-1960s, where he quickly moved up to Project Manager of their hobby kit line. He worked at Aurora for nearly a decade, brought the Monster Scenes project to life, appeared as a guest referee on an episode of The Ed Sullivan Show and, finally, in 1976, parlayed his experience to a new opportunity at Marvel Comics, where he would remain until the twilight of the analog coloring era in 1993. Andy directly contributed original coloring art to classic runs on Dave Cockrum’s X-Men, John Byrne’s Alpha Flight, and nearly every major title in Marvel’s catalog in the late ‘70s and throughout the ‘80s, sharing the director of coloring role with George Roussos, and including the original production coloring work on BOTH landmark series: The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe and the original Marvel Masterworks volumes. In his later years, Andy remained a passionate collector and co-wrote (with Dennis Prince) a book about his infamous Monster Scenes line, titled Aurora Monster Scenes - The Most Controversial Toys of a Generation.
