Item Description
14.5x22.75" artboard w/original India ink w/litho crayon shading art and penciled "Art Critic" title depicts Mullin's Brooklyn Bum character talking to his creator, who is seated at drawing board drawing cartoon that depicts unnamed Yankees player in New York's distinctive pinstripe uniform choking Cleveland Indian mascot Chief Wahoo who holds a knife while another player is rushing to assist his fellow Yankee w/a baseball bat. The cartoon Mullin is drawing is titled "That A.L. Hassle." The large full figure Brooklyn Bum at left has "Dodgers" name on his shirt and is leaning on Mullin's drawing board w/word balloon reading "What's A Guy Haffa Do T'Get His Pitchah Inna Papeh Any More!" w/another postulating "Swim Th' Channel Wit' Th' Back Stroke...Ride A Atom Bomb T' Th' Moon...Or Maybe Blow Four In A Row?" c. 1950s. The Cleveland Indians only won a single pennant in the 1950s, finishing second to the New York Yankees five times. In 1954 they had their most wins in history, 111-43, an AL record that stood for 44 years. Mullin has signed in black ink at lower left. Top margin has blue pencil notes by the artist, including "4 Cols Wed Sports." Reverse has pencil notes including "Mullin For Wed - Please Rush To - Sports Desk - World-Telegram & Sun - 125 Barclay St. NY." Artboard has some aging to margins and scattered dust soiling and top margin has crayon strokes as Mullin created this art. Fine overall, but image area remains VF/Exc. This art was purchased some years ago from the auction of "The Sporting News" Archives. Wonderfully expressive and humorous, action-packed art. Nice example by the "20th Century Dean Of Sports Cartoonists" and Brooklyn Bum creator Willard Mullin.
