Item Description
Original 7.5x9.75" nice quality silver gelatin photo w/matte finish. The team is shown posed on a ball field and wearing "Los Angeles" uniforms. John Tortes "Chief" Meyers is standing third from the left. Meyers was a Native American who played in the deadball era. This photo is from well before his days in the Major Leagues. He joined the New York Giants in 1908. He also played for the Brooklyn Robins and Boston Braves. He appeared in four World Series and finished third in NL MVP voting in 1912. With the Giants he was the primary catcher for Christy Mathewson. Photo has obvious wear/aging. Small inked dates and a few player names appear on the front but do not affect the images. Lower right corner has .25x1" missing piece. Margin/corner tip wear w/few tiny flakes and few pieces of paper adhered as once in a scrapbook. Entire reverse has paper covering from scrapbook mounting. Image shows dust soiling but all remains sharp and distinct. Good. Images of Meyers are rare and this is a particularly early and nice example. Richard Merkin Collection and comes w/Hake's COA.
