Item Description
14.5x17.75" thin artboard features specialty original art in pencil that recreates Fred Ray's cover for the Sept. 1941 issue of "Superman" #12, showing the Man of Steel walking arm-in-arm w/a sailor and soldier. Ray (1920-2001) was a comic book artist and commercial illustrator best known as the primary "Superman, Batman" and "World's Finest" cover-artist of the 1940s, whose work helped shape the defining look of DC Comic's iconic superhero characters, and for his more than two decades as artist of the DC Comics feature "Tomahawk." Ray has signed art "F Ray" at lower right. Ray only did a very limited number of re-creations later in his career, and as a result, all are highly sought after among Superman enthusiasts. Reverse appears to have some preliminary pencil work for this piece. Left and bottom margins are slightly uneven and top corners and center margin have tape staining. There is also tape staining at center left/right margins. Artboard has some tiny scattered age spots and dust soiling. Fine overall, but if matted and framed, art would display nicely. In our last auction, we sold a color recreation by Ray for $4,427. Franco Toscanini Collection.
