Item Description
13..75x20" artboard has pen and ink original art by "The Gumps" creator Sidney Smith depicting Danish-born boxer Oscar Mattheus Nielsen, who held the World Lightweight Championship 1905-1906. Nicknamed "The Durable Dane," he defended the title against former champion Joe Gans on Sept. 3, 1906, in Goldfield, NV. Gans dropped Nelson repeatedly during the bout, but could not knock him out. Finally, in the 42nd round, Nelson hit Gans below the belt, which drew a disqualification, and cost him his title. Art depicts Nelson seated behind a desk w/large "Vol. I Story Of My Life And Battle By B. Nelson" book w/word bubble reading "They Say Caesar Could Give Orders To Ten Generals And Dictate His Commentaries At The Same Time. I Don't See Where Julius Had Much On Me," referring to three small typists whose pages refer to Gans' autobiography, his neighborhood of Hegewisch (on the far southeast side of Chicago) and declining fight from Freddie Welsh (whom he would unsuccessfully challenge for the Lightweight title in 1917). Other fight offers appear in trashcan. Four pictures on wall show Nelson "As Politician, As Fighter, As Author, As Oil Magnate." Tiny goat typist at bottom center angrily notes "He's Used The Word I 4,003 Times On This One Sheet." Artboard has uneven trim at right, not affecting art. Left margin has large moisture stain that extends into boxed art area at top left, but does not directly affect art. Scattered edge/corner tip wear and aging. Fine.
