Item Description
1-1/16" (26mm). This impressive rarity is listed in DeWitt/Sullivan but not illustrated. The narrow denticulated brass rim is clean and with only a tiny 1/16" spot of tarnish at 10 o'clock. The narrow rim sets off the impressive large ferrotypes each featuring the candidate's first initial/last name, "1864" and four stars. This image of Lincoln is by famed photographer Matthew Brady and was taken in Feb. 1864. It has a 1/8" vertical scratch on his hairline (color remains intact) and a very faint 1/2" horizontal scratch (not breaking the color) just above center that is detectable only in reflected light. The image of Johnson has high contrast and only trivial pinpoints of emulsion bubbling at the extreme edges. Both images retain their original surface gloss. The last example we handled was in 2013 and sold for $3,367.43. We feel this example is equal if not slightly better. A rare opportunity to acquire a true Lincoln standout.
