Item Description
This 1.25" is unlisted in Hake and one of only three examples (found together about 5 years ago) we've seen in five decades. The button has no back paper, probably as issued. Outer front edge has a couple of light tan marks scattered around the circumference but vast majority remains clean. The simplicity of this button belies its importance as an historical artifact. Button reads "Homecoming Celebration/200000 League/1909/Norfolk, Va". On December 16, 1907 (see previous item) Roosevelt ordered 16 battleships on a round the world journey with each of these vessels traveling about 43,000 miles for a total of 688,000 miles which is the equivalent to the "200000 League" specified on this button. Roosevelt was there for the departure ceremonies and he returned on Feb 22, 1909 for the fleet's return. He stood for the last time as Commander-In-Chief on the bridge of the Mayflower. Eventually, through the rain and fog he saw with his poor eyesight what others had seen sooner and shouted "Here They Are." As the fleet came into fuller view he proclaimed "That Is The Answer To My Critics...Another Chapter Is Complete, And I Could Not Ask For A Finer Concluding Scene For My Administration." Rare.
