Item Description
Ned Smith (1919-1985) in his 46 year career specialized in precisely accurate drawings and paintings of wildlife for books, magazines and limited edition prints. His original paintings command prices in excess of $60,000 and some of his most popular prints exceed $5000. Over the years he created 120 cover paintings for the Pennsylvania Game News magazine. His columns, articles and art appeared in Sports Afield,  National Wildlife and National Geographic. He illustrated 14 books including the Peterson series Field Guide to Birds' Nests. This piece was purchased directly from Smith in December, 1978 by Theodore R. Hake,  the father of Hake's founder, Ted Hake. T.R.H. was an avid ornithologist and friend of Smith's with the two sharing many birding field trips over several decades. The art is on a stiff paper sheet 7-3/8 x 8" and the image and signature area covers 3.5 x 5". Background of the art area has about a dozen virtual pinpoint brown dots but only four widely scattered dots are dark enough to be apparent. Reverse margins have border of masking tape from once being framed. Smith captioned the art: "Two Rare Ones- The Peregrine Falcon (Right) And The Bachman's Warbler."  Art is signed bottom right "Ned Smith." A beautiful original by a famous and in demand wildlife artist. Comes with Hake's COA.
