Item Description
15 x 21" painting signed on the front "Sean Wyeth" and with ink notation by the artist on one of the reverse wood stretchers: "Descending" /15" x 21" Oil On Canvas/ By Sean Christopher Wyeth. Sean Wyeth (born 1953) is a reclusive Pennsylvania artist who claims renowned painter N.C. Wyeth as his grandfather, although there is controversy within the Wyeth family on this matter. Ted Hake, Hake's founder, purchased this painting directly from the artist during a visit to his home on the edge of a rural cornfield in southeastern Pennsylvania around 1990. Wyeth's early career includes being the youngest animator at Walt Disney Studios where at age 18 he worked on films such as Robin Hood. Bantam Books published his first bookcover in 1975 leading to membership in the New York Society of Illustrators. At age 23, in 1976, he had his first solo museum exhibition at the Berkshire Museum in Pittsfield, MA. We can find no documented sales of Wyeth's work. However, in January, 2016 (and perhaps still) there was an eBay offering of a 1984 Sean Wyeth original watercolor of a Pennsylvania farmhouse in winter with a $25,000.00 Buy It Now. In addition, in October, 2005 New York's Bon a Tirer Gallery announced an exhibit of his paintings, watercolors and drawings with press release headlines: "Bon a Tirer Gallery Brings Back To New York The Great Painter / Sean Wyeth: Return of a Pennsylvania Recluse." The press release also stated " ... endorsed by Anne D'Harnoncourt, Director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art". The concluding quote in the press release from the gallery director Steven Demas is "His (Sean Wyeth) paintings are a haunting vision, a momentary glimpse into his perceptual experience, but remain timeless images of beauty". Condition is Mint as created and framed by the artist.
