Item Description
Thin artboard has 7.25x10.5" India ink image area w/hand-inked caption on front/back. Du Maurier (1834-1896) began providing art for "Punch" in 1865, and is also known for the novels "Trilby" and "Ibbetson." This art was published in the Sept. 2, 1893 issue of "Punch" and art features well-dressed man seated next to piano w/woman at right/left. Caption reads "Things One Would Rather Have Expressed Differently. Miss Bessy - Would You Sing Something Captain Belsize? Captain Belsize Oh I No Longer Sing Now Do I Miss Caroline? Miss Caroline - I'm Afraid You Do Captain Belsize!" Extreme margin edges have obvious aging, but art still displays Exc. and would look great framed. Superb pen work w/wonderful use of light and shadow. Schechter Family Collection.
