Item Description
3.75" ribbon badge with brass hanger holding cello "Boston Rooters" insert. A few slight separations, very minor, on the suspended American Flag which joins a double sided 1.25" celluloid. VF. Front image of an early electrical hot plate upon which sits a crock of "Boston" (beans) while balancing on the crock rim is a devil in an apron using a spoon to fill a bowl in his other hand. Entire scene is accented by lightning bolt designs with steam rising from the top and surrounding the devil. Reverse text is "Boston Vs. Baltimore Sept. 24th, 25th and 27th." The front of the celluloid has only the very slightest touch of a few tiny age marks on far left at ten o'clock. Full gloss. In an internet summary of this series written by Bill Felber he titled his piece "September 27, 1897: Good (Beaneaters) Versus Evil (Orioles)". To quote Felber's first paragraph "More Than A Battle For The 1897 National League Pennant, The Contest That Played Out At Baltimore's Union Grounds Was A Living, Breathing Metaphor. To The 30,000 Fans Who Literally Broke Down The Park's Gates And Walls To See It, And To The Thousands Nationally Who Followed Telegraph Accounts In Locations As Distant As Los Angeles, It Was The Real World Playing Out Of The Eternal Struggle Of Good Vs. Evil." The article also states that "A Delegation Of More Than 100 Fans From Boston-The Genesis Of The Famed 'Royal Rooters'-Showed Up Complete With A Brass Band To Challenge The Home Team's Noise Advantage." Likely this badge was worn by one of those who made the journey from Boston to Baltimore. At the end of this historic series, Boston was a game and a half in front of the Orioles with just three games left to play in the regular season. They achieved two victories in Brooklyn the following weekend and claimed the pennant, thus ending the Orioles pennant streak at three. One of the earliest baseball rarities from the Paul Muchinsky Collection.
