Item Description
John Cullen Murphy (1919-2004) was an American illustrator best known for his three decades of work on the "Prince Valiant" and "Big Ben Bolt" comic strips. Offered here is 11.25x14-7/8" sheet of textured art paper w/three inked portraits, including profile of boxing character Big Ben Bolt at left, self-portrait of the artist at center and profile portrait of Prince Valiant at right. Artist has signed at lower right of art, which was commissioned by Brian M. Kane for an article that appeared in "The Comics Journal" #253 (June 2003). This art also appeared in Fantagraphics Books' 2009 "The Definitive Prince Valiant Companion" (see following item #2012). Sheet has some scattered dust soiling w/faint spot of moisture staining at lower right, not affecting art or signature. Fine/VF overall, but art could be matted for an Exc. display. A wonderful and truly one-of-a-kind piece of art. From the collection of comics and illustration historian Brian M. Kane.
