Item Description
6-1/8x9.5" hardcover limited edition hardcover of Pierre Louÿs' "Aphrodite: Ancient Manners." Private 1926 printing w/illustrations by Boris Riedel. Specially marked page notes edition number of 1,500 (1,000 for America, 500 for Great Britain), of which this has been hand-numbered "876." Apparently presented as a gift by Riedel (who was the art editor of the "Chicagoan") to Foster, who has signed his rarely seen full "Harold R. Foster" name on front endpapers in black ink. Inside front cover has Foster's personal library bookplate, featuring Prince Valiant. Book shows heavy and obvious wear but is complete and Good/VG overall. Book comes w/VHS tape of Foster's 1954 appearance on the "This Is Your Life" from Brian M. Kane's personal library and a sealed copy of Kane's "Hal Foster: Prince Of Illustrators" hardcover book in slipcase, published by Vanguard Publications, 2001. Limited edition of 1,000, sealed book has label w/"0296" edition number. Signed by Kane and James Bama. Small corner split w/archival tape to keep shrink-wrap from splitting further, o/w NM. Comes w/"Special Hal Foster Issue" of "Comic Book Marketplace" magazine from March 2002 that features "The Making Of 'Hal Foster: Prince Of Illustrators'" that has also been signed by Kane. NM. A unique lot for the Foster collector. From the collection of comics and illustration historian Brian M. Kane.
