Item Description
14x17" double mat contains 13x16" sheet of animation paper that has been taped to back of second mat at top. Sheet bears finely detailed charcoal image of rampaging gorilla named "Gigantic" from the 1942 Fleischer Studios "Superman" cartoon "Terror On The Midway." This was the ninth of the 17 animated "Superman" cartoons created by Fleischer Studios. Plot centers around a huge gorilla escaping his cage, causing panic and a fire before being subdued by Superman. Art shows Gigantic w/lassos around his arms, another about to encircle his head as circus members attempt to recapture him. Image area measures 7.75x10.75". Directed by Dave Fleischer and produced by Max Fleischer w/animation for this cartoon by Orestes Calpini and James Davis, though their names do not appear anywhere on this art. Upper left has "Job No." inkstamp w/handwritten numbers and margins have handwritten production notations at upper left and lower right; lower right reading "OK - Dave." This is Dave Fleischer's personal approval. Sheet has some handling wear, but as matted, this large and dynamic image makes for an Exc. display. All Fleischer Superman art is rare and this is an exceptional example. Jan Wahl Collection.
