Item Description
Complete set of three 18.5x25.25" thin artboards w/pen and ink original art for "Letters That Cross" story that was published in the March 1963 issue of "MAD" magazine. Art was provided by Bob Clarke (1926-2013), an American illustrator best-known for his work w/"MAD." Artboards feature complete humorous story that deals w/letters that got crossed in the mail, w/one party writing in angry tone only to have second letter be from someone that would not approve of the tone of their letter. First page features tenant and letters to/from landlords. Second page features writer angry w/stock results from Missile Electronics Corp. only to receive a follow-up letter announcing merger w/DuPont. Third page features two letter series, first dealing w/man angry w/lateness of answer as to whether he got job or not only for follow-up letter to reveal address mistake; second deals w/cereal customer angry about comedy contest only to be revealed as tied for first place. Each artboard has title paste-over and typed response letters are also paste-over while angry letter have been hand-lettered. Clarke has also added accompanying illustrations, including apartment building, missile base w/atomic symbol and cereal bowl. First tow pages also feature mail delivery images and apprehensive mail recipient images, including man at "Clarke" mailbox reading letter w/gun to his head. Artboards have editorial stamp at bottom right and inked numbers; backs of each artboard also has copyright stamp. Artboard have scattered corner tip wear, margin aging/staining and are Fine overall w/Exc. art.
