Item Description
2.25" w/"AFL-CIO IUDTW Local 24" union bug at 6 o'clock. Dots of light brown stain along edge from 3 o'clock to 9 o'clock and w/only a few between 11 and 1 o'clock. VG. This button relates to the Van Avery Drug Store picket. The drug store owned by a white family and catered to a largely African American community but would not hire black employees. Local youth in co-operation w/the NAACP boycotted the store from June of 1963 into the following fall. The dates fall during a boiling point of the civil rights movement and given the time period and use of the central graphic it's likely that this button was used by a small delegation at the Aug. 28 March On Washington where Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous "I Have A Dream Speech." Only the second example known to us.
