Item Description
3.5" w/curl naming NYC maker N.G. Slater. Additional text at bottom reads "March Against Fear." This scarce civil rights button documents the March begun June 6, 1966 during which Meredith was shot by a gunman using a shotgun. After the attempt on his life other civil rights activists arrived to continue the march in Meredith's name including Dr. King and SNCC's Stokely Carmichael. It was at this march where Carmichael, after being arrested and released from jail, delivered his famous "Black Power" speech. This became a turning point in the civil rights movement with SNCC's "Black Power" philosophy now competing for attention with SCLC's "Freedom Now" non-violent philosophy. NM displaying Mint.
