Item Description
Large Polk/Dallas is 1-7/16" in white metal with small hole on top edge as issued. The obverse has lost about 50% of the silver flashing but nearly all remains on the reverse. Obverse has eagle above large jugate images with the names and date below "Polk/1844/Dallas." A slogan at the bottom reads "The Peoples Candidates." Reverse has female figure representing Liberty plus images of a spinning wheel, sheep, agricultural implements and a cask inscribed "Tobacco." The slogan at the top reads "Success Will Crown Our Efforts." Bottom edge carries name of the engraver "Wagner." Very scarce. Taylor is 1-5/8" in copper on a thick planchet with traces of original luster remaining. Obverse has his name and portrait with slogan "Never Surrenders." Reverse slogan reads "I Ask No Favors & I Shrink From No Responsibility" plus a center scene of eagle atop a panel surrounded by flags with the panel listing names of his Mexican War battles. DeWitt notes that about 25 examples were made in copper around 1860 making this example quite a rarity. Obverse has a small dark spot along the back of his head but overall condition is Exc.
