1935 "NEGRO NATIONAL LEAGUE" INCREDIBLE BROADSIDE FEATURING 15 HOF MEMBERS.
Item Description
22x28" cardboard. Printed by "Exhibitors Program Co. Pittsburgh, Pa." All eight teams from the 1935 season of the Negro National League are represented. Six teams feature composite photographs showing players in uniform (mostly portrait shots but some larger and/or full figure): Homestead Grays, Pittsburgh Crawfords, Chicago American Giants, Brooklyn Eagles, New York Cubans, and the Nashville/Columbus Elite Giants. The other two teams "Philadelphia Stars, Newark Dodgers" are represented by name only. "Stars" text also notes "1934 Champions" although this area has a 1.5 area of missing surface paper so text reads just "1934 Cha." Center area of broadside is blank below text "Nashville Elite Giants Versus" so game specific information could be added for the scheduled event. National Baseball Hall Of Fame members, shown by team are: Chicago American Giants-
Willie Foster, Mule Suttles, Turkey Stearnes, Willie Wells; Grays-Cumberland Posey, Buck Leonard, Raymond Brown; Eagles-Leon Day, Ben Taylor; Cubans-Martin Dihigo; Crawfords-Oscar Charleston, Josh Gibson, Satchel Paige, Cool Papa Bell, Judy Johnson. Other key players are: Larry Brown, Alex Radcliffe, Quincy Trouppe, Candy Jim Taylor, Bill Byrd, Sammy Hughes, Bill Wright, Jerry Benjamin, Vic Harris, George Scales, Rap Dixon, Frank Duncan, Dick Lundy, Alejandro Oms, Lazaro Salazar, Luis Tiant Sr., Jimmy Crutchfield, Jelly Jackson. Posters of this era rarely featured players, let alone full teams making this broadside all the more remarkable. This is a virtual who's who of Negro League stars of this time period and a truly unique design for a Negro League piece of any era. All over noticeable aging, age toning and soiling. 1x2" piece missing from top left boarder (Chicago) and1x2" surface paper lift at lower left (Elite Giants) but neither greatly impacting player images. 2" triangular piece missing from lower left corner. Several 1" margin tears and additional edge wear. Few long but lt. crease lines running horizontally on top third. Some small surface paper rubs/nicks to some of the photo areas but all remain strong and bold. However, all remains structurally sound and in its original state, no repairs or restoration. Good. The earliest known collectible for three Negro League Hall of Famers- Buck Leonard, Raymond Brown and Leon Day. A must have for any Negro League or historic baseball collection, and if you only have need for one such piece, this broadside has it all.
