Item Description
In 1941, to promote the release of Fleischer Studios "Superman" cartoon, a series of four full color 8x10" glossy publicity stills were released. All are now very rare. Offered here is a 12.5x14.25" artboard w/original hand-painted bkg. for accompanying acetate sheet that has matching hand-painted images of Superman supporting collapsing wall and fleeing Bulleteers. Art shows scene from fifth (of 17) "Superman" cartoon, "The Bulleteers," which was directed by Dave Fleischer and produced by Max Fleischer. Plot deals w/terrorist group flying a strange bullet-shaped car through buildings, causing destruction and panic. Art shows Superman supporting falling building as The Bulleteers flee (this image differs slightly from the actual cartoon). Cel has been professionally restored to original appearance. Artboard has even aging and some scattered margin wear but if matted and framed w/cel, would make for an Exc. display. Lot also includes 13x16" sheet of animation paper w/7-3/8x9-1/8" image area w/lead/red pencil original art that matches the cel. Art has production notations along margins, including "Ink The Five Little Figures" and "Ink Superman" w/faint Superman outline sketch at right. Sheet is evenly aged and shows moderate handling wear, w/archival tape repair at leftmost of three peg holes at top. While sheet is VG overall, art area remains clean and would display VF if framed. Comes w/color photocopy of the matching publicity still. Of the four stills, it is our opinion that this one shows the best image of Superman in action, w/his full profile visible. All original art - production or publicity - from any of the Fleischer Superman cartoons is extremely rare and highly sought after. This lot represents one of the best offerings of original art we have ever seen for these historic cartoons. Franco Toscanini Collection.
