Item Description
Reach Official AL (Harridge) baseball. Signed by members of the 1939 Philadelphia Athletics and has 20 signatures in total. Key signatures include George Caster, Dick Siebert, Bob Johnson, Frankie Hayes, Wally Moses, Bill Nagel and Harry O'Neill (1917-1945), a MLB player who appeared in just one game for the Philadelphia Athletics in 1939, replacing Frankie Hayes as catcher for the last two innings of a July 23, 1939 game against the Detroit Tigers. O'Neill did not come to bat and was not credited w/any assists or putouts. That was the extent of his MLB career. O'Neill then enlisted in the Marines and was wounded by shrapnel while fighting in Saipan, returning to the US for treatment before returning to combat, where he was killed by a sniper in Iwo Jima on March 6, 1945. O'Neill and Elmer Gedeon were the only two MLB players killed during World War II. Given O'Neill's extremely short MLB career and his unfortunate death during wartime, his signature is one of the most fleeting in American sports culture. Full list of signatures online. Ball is evenly aged overall and has been shellacked. Most signatures remain distinct. Fine overall. A true rarity for the signed baseball collector. Comes with Hake's COA and JSA LOA.
