Item Description
Tintype under a beveled edge glass oval set into an ornate geometric design multi-level brass frame 1.25" wide x 1-5/8" tall x 3/16" thick. The only obverse damage is a tiny hole/gouge at 3 o'clock in the frame alongside the brass oval which holds the glass. This shows as a less than 1/16" mark. The tintype is extremely clear and shows Scott c. 1861 as the Commanding General of the U.S. Army who authored the Anaconda Plan to defeat the Confederacy. Reverse of the frame is convex. The vertical pin shaft appears original and has small bends with point firmly held by the original clasp. The one thing not original is the pin in the "T" shaped hinge. The replacement is an extremely old, thin brass pin half of which goes through the slots of the hinge with the other half folded at a right angle so it cannot come undone. The frame was pinned to its original 3" diameter rosette of thin blue, cream and pale red fabric backed by hand stitched brown fabric, likely enclosing cardboard. The 2.25" red streamer and 4" cream streamer remain but the 2.25" blue streamer snapped off. We will ship the item as two pieces but the frame can easily be re-pinned to the rosette if desired. Condition issues as noted but the frame and tintype display as NM. A rare photographic badge c. 1861 showing the 1852 presidential candidate.
