Item Description
22x28.25" cardboard poster advertising a "Big 4th Of July Dance" at the "American Legion Hall" in "Chattanooga Wed. July 4" 1951. Photo at left of "Jackie Brenston" w/additional text "Singing 'Rocket 88' Featuring Ike Turner King Of The Ivories" and listing additional hit songs "'I'm Lonesome Baby'" and "'Heartbroken And Worried.'" Moisture stain along bottom third visible only on reverse. Professional restoration along bottom and left edges, to top corners and two vertical tears along bottom edge. Otherwise only a few scattered and tiny minor touch ups. Staple holes scattered throughout and even a couple of original staples remain in the lower right quadrant. Overall VG. This show was less than four months after "Rocket 88" was released by Chess Records in 1951. The song is often cited as the first ever rock 'n roll tune and reached No. 1 on the Billboard R&B chart. Adding another layer to the immense history this piece represents is that Rocket 88 was recorded in Memphis by Sam Phillips who placed it w/Chess Records for release, Phillips used the profits to start his legendary Memphis label Sun Records. An important artifact of the earliest days of rock 'n roll.
