Item Description
15x20-1/8" thick artboard has mixed media original art for premium sign prototype, advertising the "Bang-Bang Gun" offered in boxes of Quaker "Puffed Rice Sparkies." 1950s. Art features cowboy shooting the futuristically designed Bang-Bang Gun, which is shown actual size. Top of artboard has area w/painted over text that once said "Roy Rogers," indicating at one time this was proposed as a Roy Rogers premium. Hand-lettered text reads "Get This Bang-Bang Gun With 1 Package Of Delicious Quaker Puffed Rice Sparkies" w/image of cereal box at right. Additional small image of gun shows how it was used and text block beside this mentions radio show (though title/station are not listed). Margins have some scattered dust soiling, but art remains clean and VF/Exc. Comes w/matching 3x22.75" strip of paper w/three panels of mixed media original art for cereal box strip wrapper. Strip has been folded to fit around box and was at one point glued. Glue has dried and shows some staining to back, not affecting art panels. Side panel images features repeated cowboy image w/gun while opposite side panel features another illustration, showing two images of gun and how to make it produce "Bang-Bang Noise." Main panel features another gun image w/"While They Last - A Bang Bang Gun With This Package Of Quaker Puffed Rice Sparkies - Wholesome Grains Of Rice 'Shot From Guns'." Some scattered aging but Fine/VF overall. 4.5x7" long prototype gun (4.5x10.5" w/pop-out section extended) features all original art, w/cowboy portrait on grips and hand-lettered cereal name w/image of cereal box below barrel and "Wheat Shot From Guns - Here Comes Quaker With A Bang! Bang!" text on extended pop-out section, which features image of shooting Puffed Rice Sparkies. One has some lt. penciled notes on area below barrel. Prototype has some lt, even aging but is o/w VF/Exc. Comes w/14-1/8x20" stat showing altered sign, showcasing Terry of "Terry And The Pirates" instead of cowboy and mention of the radio show and Blue Network at bottom. Text on cereal box has been altered to mention Terry as well. An interesting progression in design of this premium. Vertical crease at center and some scattered handling wear. Fine overall. Among the very best Gold prototype lots we have ever offered, showcasing the 1950s obsession w/Western and space themes. From the archives of premium creators Sam & Gordon Gold and comes with LOA.
