Item Description
Mullin (1902-1978) was a sports cartoonist known for his creation of the Brooklyn Dodgers mascot the Brooklyn Bum. Working for the "New York World-Telegram" newspaper and "The Sporting News," he won the National Cartoonist Society Reuben Award in 1954 and also won their Sports Cartoon Award every year 1957-1962 and again in 1964-1965. Offered here is 15-7/8x20" mat w/14-3/8x15.5" artboard taped onto back. Pen and ink original art w/blue pencil accents lampoons New York mayor Fiorello La Guardia's first pitch for 1944 ball game between the New York Giants and the Boston Braves. Art shows nine scenes, w/La Guardia showing some difficulty pitching and then being very concerned w/how it will be seen. End text mentions Giants players Bill Voiselle and Hugh Lubby (who was only on the team for one year, 1944) and Braves player Butch Niemen. Upper right has 5.5" tear w/masking tape repair on back. Margins have some minor aging, but art is o/w clean. Fine/VF. Nice example by the "20th Century Dean Of Sports Cartoonists" Willard Mullin.
