Item Description
Sam Gold's experience in designing Amos & Andy premiums, led to the development of this "Sambo The Talking Ventrillo" premium ventriloquist dummy, which shows a notable Andy influence. 1930s. Lot includes two prototype dummies, each cut out of thin cardboard and featuring original art. Each measures approx. 19" and is constructed of two pieces; body and head. One dummy is all original art in mixed media style while other has stat as base of dummy w/much original art accents added to clothing and face. Folded as designed w/expected wear. All art version has some creases to derby hat and scattered edge flaking to black paint of coat. Tip off foot. VG/Fine overall while other is VF. Lot also includes three 18x24" vellum sheets, featuring designs for four different advertising displays. One features large black pencil art for prototype store sign w/nicely rendered image of premium dummy and blank product box. Another features full color design for different format prototype store sign showing two boxes set by sign. Third sheet features designs for two different displays, one is similar to full color prototype sign but in different configuration while other half of sheet shows display of five dummies holding dialogue boxes and attached at top of hats to string. One has been complete in full color while others are in bw. Of note, all hand-lettered text features stereotypical African-American vernacular english, matching the stereotypical depiction and name of the character. Each sheet has been folded into quarters and shows scattered handling/edge wear. Fine overall w/Exc. art. Unique lot. From the archives of premium creators Sam & Gordon Gold and comes with LOA.
