Item Description
This large 1.75 button is without back paper and without maker's name, but it is the earliest Santa button we've ever offered and it is dated with certainty to 1898, two years after the pin-back button was introduced. The Sunday, November 20, 1898 edition of the Brooklyn Eagle carries a coupon for readers to submit to the "Editor Childrens' Page, Brooklyn Eagle". The reader pledges to give at least one present to a child who otherwise would likely not receive any. The coupon inscribed "Christmas, 1898" concludes: "Please Get Me A Membership Pin And Enroll Me As A Member Of The Brooklyn Eagle Santa Claus Aid Society". Reverse of button has tiny 1/8" cello cut on the curl. Obverse of button has faint and small scattered tan age marks on extreme perimeter, the worst being a 3/32" deep by .25" long tan spot at 5 o'clock. Cello retains full gloss with excellent graphics of newspaper's eagle logo, full figure Santa in fur trimmed outfit with toy sack on his back and accents of crossed American flags. First we've offered and one of only two known to us. Fine and Rare. We will include a photocopy of the newspaper form.
