Item Description
Will Elder (1921-2008) was an illustrator and comic book artist best known for a frantically funny cartoon style that helped launch Harvey Kurtzman's "Mad" comic book in 1952. Offered here is a lot of 18 pieces (including mailing envelopes) in total, representing the long-running personal relationship between Elder and collector and fan Charlie Roberts.
Lot includes -
- Five handwritten letters (two w/self-portraits original art) and note, discussing art commissions (w/one letter humorously noting returned check as Elder has over committed himself and would not be able to accept and more commissions until he worked through his current backlog) w/additional discussions about visits and Elder thanking Robert for sending him books. Two letters come w/original mailing envelopes that have been hand-addressed.
- Small card w/handwritten holiday greeting.
- Four personal checks (three signed by Elder); dated 1979-1990 w/notes for "'Annie Fanny' Drawing" and "Watercolor Of 'Wonder Woman And The Heap"
- Signed program for The Clear View School benefit auction which included original art from various artist including Elder.
- Photo of Elder w/OrlandoCon convention program
- Four folders containing color photos; including two w/Harvey Kurtzman; all have been signed by Elder w/Kurtzman also signing the two frames holding pictures he appeared in.
- Large mailing envelop that has been hand-addressed and has "W. Elder" signature at return address.
Letters have been folded as issued and envelopes show expected mailing wear but majority of contents are Exc. A truly one-of-a-kind collection. Charlie Roberts Collection.
