5.5x8.25" hardcover w/original dust jacket and 122 pages. Written by American author and journalist Tom Wolfe (1930-2018) widely known for his association w/New Journalism, a style of news writing and journalism developed in the 1960s and 1970s that incorporated literary techniques. Published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux, ©1975. This is a first printing, first edition of "The Painted Word," a book of art criticism. Boldly signed by Wolfe in black felt tip pen on front end paper, inscribed to his friend the artist Richard Merkin. Inscription reads "For Richard Merkin, This Corn: Flower In The Lapel Of The Higher Truth. From Tom Wolfe." Upper right corner has denting resulting in .5" to 1" crease to cover, pages and dust jacket, which remains free of clips though has some aging along top margin. Book is Fine overall. Inscription and signature display Exc. Comes with Hake's COA and JSA COA. Richard Merkin Collection.
