5.75x8-3/8" hardcover w/original dust jacket and 246 pages. Written by American author and journalist Tom Wolfe (1930-2018) widely known for his association w/New Journalism, a style of news writing and journalism developed in the 1960s and 1970s that incorporated literary techniques. Published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux, ©1976. This is a first printing of "Mauve Gloves & Madmen, Clutter & Vine," a book consisting of 11 essays and one short story written  by Wolfe between 1967 and 1976. It includes the essay in which he coined the term "The 'Me' Decade" to refer to the 1970s. In addition to the stories, Wolfe also illustrated the book. Book has been boldly signed by Wolfe in black felt tip pen on front end paper, inscribed to his friend the artist Richard Merkin. Inscription reads "For Richard Merkin, For Whom Mauve Gloves Are Merely For Openers, From Tom Wolfe & With Profound Salaams." Wolfe has added "January 1, 1977" date at lower right. Inscription bears wonderful flourishes. Book has just minor corner tip/shelf wear and dust jacket remains free of clips. Dust jacket has some lt. aging but book is VF overall.
