Item Description
7.75x9-5/8" original glossy photo depicting Cuban baseball great, Adolfo Luque during his time as player/manager for the Almendares Scorpions ball club during the 1930'. Photographer's stamp on the back indicates "Jose Luis Lopez". Luque made his professional baseball debut for Habana during the fall of 1911, pitching a barnstorming game against the Philadelphia Phillies. By 1914, Luque would move on to the U.S. Major Leagues, where he spent an illustrious 20 year career as one of the great starting pitchers of the 1910s - 1920s. Finishing with a won-loss record of 193-179 during his MLB career, Luque also posted a very respectable 3.24 career ERA. Luque would spend almost every winter season playing in his native country of Cuba, primarily for the Almendares team. Once his playing days had ended, Luque would continue to manage several different winter league ball clubs until 1955-56. Photo exhibits numerous surface wrinkles and creases along with a heavy, horizontal crease across the entire center of the photo. Several pieces of vintage tape have stabilized tears primarily visible on the back along with a pinhole which appears at the center of the left, front edge. Back of photo exhibits some light staining throughout. Fair/Good. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
