Item Description
7x9-3/8" original matte photo depicting Cuban baseball great, Alejandro Crespo during his final playing days in the Mexican League for the Las Aguilas Cibaenas ball club. This exact photo also appears as part of a real photo postcard-type issue picturing many of the team's star players during the 1952 season. An autographed Willard Brown from this issue sold for several thousand dollars a number of years ago. Crespo would play two seasons of Negro League baseball  for the New York Cubans during 1940 and 1946, while spending the majority of his playing career during the 1940s down in Mexico, where he was a consistent .300 hitter, posting numbers of .361, .332, .331, .316, .311, .311, .346 and .306. Playing for Toreon in 1943, Alejandro led the league in RBI's. Crespo would also player nearly every winter in his homeland of Cuba, primarily for the Cienfuegos ball club. Photo exhibits moderate, even corner wear along with numerous surface wrinkles and heavy creases. Back of photo is blank with just some light general foxing visible. Fair/Good. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
