Item Description
15x22-1/8" sheet of stiff paper features 11 panels of pen and ink original art by "Archie" co-creator Bob Montana. Art is for the May 17, 1959 Sunday page and features Mr. Weatherbee and Coach discussing a marathon, w/Weatherby dreaming of producing an Olympic athlete. His dreams are shattered when Coach announces it's a "Scooter Marathon." Mr. Weatherbee ask Archie if it's safe to which Archie replies that the scooters have been rigged to only go 20 MPH. Jughead shows up late w/a regular foot-powered scooter, causing everyone to laugh. Jughead has the last laugh as flat tires, muddy conditions, gas issues and wrecks leave him the sole contestant. Last panel shows Jughead winning marathon. Mr. Weatherbee appears in first four panels, Archie in three, Veronica in two, Reggie and Betty in two and Jughead in four (a fifth in shadow). First panel has "Archie" title paste-over which has obvious staining. Last panel has been dated and eighth panel has McClure Newspaper Syndicate paste-over. Pin holes at corners. Editorial notations at top margin as well as blue pencil date at upper left and lead pencil date at upper right. Sheet has been folded into sixths, w/folds along spaces between panels and not affecting art. .75" tear at top left margin along fold line. Fine overall, but art remains clean and nice for display.
