Item Description
"Weird Tales" is an American fantasy and horror fiction pulp magazine founded by J. C. Henneberger and J. M. Lansinger in late 1922. The first issue, dated March 1923, appeared on newsstands February 18, 1923. The first editor, Edwin Baird, printed early work by H.P. Lovecraft, Seabury Quinn and Clark Ashton Smith, all of whom would go on to become popular writers. Offered here is the very first issue of the longest-running and most influential of all pulp horror titles. This copy is a "first state," identified by the orange border around "Ooze," the man's orange shirt, and the woman's black bow (the "second state" printing features different colors). Published by Rural Publishing Corp., issue features great cover by R.R. Epperly showing man and woman being attacked by large octopus. Front and back covers are detached, w/moderate corner tip foxing and scattered edge tears. Both front/back covers have thin strip of tape staining along spine. Front cover has some penciling by price and above "Ooze" title. Issue is complete w/interior pages having aged to tan in color and remain supple w/just minor edge wear. Spine shows wear w/approx. 60% remaining. Fair. Among the rarest and most sought after issues of any pulp magazine, obtaining a copy in any condition is a remarkable achievement for most collectors.
