Item Description
5.5x8.5" softcover w/128 pages. Adams Press ©1976 by Effa Manley and Leon Herbert Hardwick. This informative book is described as "A History-In-The-Brief About The Rise And Fall Of Black Baseball." Numerous bw photos throughout such as  Rube Foster, Pop Lloyd, Josh Gibson and many more. Boldly signed and personally inscribed on the page featuring a memoriam to her late husband Abe, she adds "Happy Reading" above her signature. Lt. cover aging, clean contents. An Exc. copy. The book itself is scarce and saw a very limited printing from a small publisher. Signed copies are all the more desirable. Book also comes w/two rarely seen promotional papers, one is an order form for the book and the other reproduces a newspaper review of the book from the time of its initial release. Fold lines but Exc.  Effa was a female sports executive and the first (and still only) woman inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. She co-owned the Newark Eagles baseball franchise in the Negro League with her husband Abe from 1935-1946 and was sole owner through 1948 after his death. She passed away in 1981, just five years after publication of this book. Signed items are very desirable and rarely come up for auction. Comes with Hake's COA and JSA LOA. Richard Merkin Collection.
