Item Description
8x32" original glossy panoramic photo depicting the 1931 Montreal Royals (International League) baseball club, highlighted by the inclusion of Jocko Conlan, future National Baseball Hall of Fame enshrine as an umpire. 25 team members are shown in uniform posed on their ball field, team name/date printed at top, names and role/position printed at bottom. Montreal would finish the 1931 season in fourth place in the Class AA - International League with a record of 85-80 under Manager Ed Holly. In addition to Conlan, other future Major Leaguers from this team pictured here are: Doc Gautreau, Jimmy Ripple, Hank Thormahlen and Billy Urbanski. As one of the leading hitters on the club, Jocko batted an even .300 for the season with 178 hits, including 28 doubles. At the conclusion of his 14 year professional baseball career, including two brief stints in the Majors with the Chicago White Sox, Conlan would go on to umpiring school and ultimately became a NL umpire from 1941 to 1965. During this stint, Conlan was selected to umpire in five World Series and six All-Star games. Receiving his highest honor in 1974, Jocko was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veteran's Committee. Some moisture staining and wear at top left and bottom right corners. Other addition margin wear and scattered lt. aging. Photo remains glossy and image is bold and sharp. Fine. A rare panorama. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
